A blizzard. A broken leg. A number one fan.

Best-selling novelist Paul Sheldon crashes his car on a Colorado mountain road in the middle of a snowstorm. He wakes in a stranger’s spare bedroom with both legs shattered, no phone, and no way out. His rescuer is Annie Wilkes — a former nurse, and, as she happily tells him, his number one fan.

She has read every book in his Misery Chastain series. She has strong opinions about how the last one ended. And she is in no hurry at all to call for help.

William Goldman’s stage adaptation of Stephen King’s novel strips the story down to three actors and one farmhouse, and turns the screw slowly for ninety minutes. It is funny until it isn’t. Bring someone whose hand you can hold.
