About the Show
Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy who leads his fellow “newsies” in a strike against the powerful newspaper publishers who exploit them.
Based on the 1992 film and inspired by the real-life Newsboys’ Strike of 1899, this Tony Award-winning musical features a high-octane score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, thrilling choreography, and a story about fighting for what’s right.
It’s a battle of David vs. Goliath — played out on the streets and rooftops of turn-of-the-century Manhattan.

When powerful newspaper publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise the price newsboys must pay for their papers, young Jack Kelly rallies his fellow newsies to strike. Armed with nothing but moxie, wit, and each other, they take on the titans of industry in a David-and-Goliath struggle that changed labor history.
With a soaring score featuring songs like “Seize the Day,” “Carrying the Banner,” and “King of New York,” Newsies won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Original Score and Best Choreography. It’s a show about the power of standing together — told with the kind of explosive energy that’ll have you on your feet.
This summer’s production at the Opera House brings together local performers of all ages in a celebration of community, courage, and the belief that even the smallest voice can make the biggest difference.
A Note on Casting Our production of Newsies will be cast based on talent, energy, and storytelling — not traditional gender casting expectations. While many of the Newsies are traditionally played by boys, we are excited to cast strong dancers, singers, and performers of all genders in these roles. If you bring the spirit, athleticism, and heart of a Newsie, we want to see you.
